Space Exploration by Fishes

Imagine a world deep within a well—a colossal chasm stretching 600 meters into the earth. Water fills the bottom 100 meters, forming a vast, mysterious realm where tiny fish dwell. These creatures are so small and feeble that they cannot even leap two meters above their domain. The sheer scale of their world blinds them to its boundaries; to them, the concept of an 'outside' is unfathomable. Neither do they know that beyond their aquatic haven, they cannot survive.

Among these fish, there exist the inquisitive and the bold—the smarties. One day, a particularly intelligent fish begins to wonder: could he surpass the limits of his jump? He had never tried, but the thought gnawed at him. With relentless determination, he made attempt after attempt, failing repeatedly. Yet, after more than a hundred tries, he managed to propel himself higher than ever before. To his astonishment, it was easier than he had imagined. Excited, he shared his discovery with a few like-minded friends. Some succeeded in reaching higher depths of the water, though many failed, and some even perished in the process. Yet, they still had no knowledge of where the water ended.

The brightest among them could not shake a single burning question: what lies beyond? Could there be another universe beyond their own? He began theorizing, debating, and analyzing, rallying other inquisitive minds to embark on a grand endeavor. Together, they devised a plan: they would build a device to propel them higher than any fish had gone before.

After tireless effort, they constructed their first prototype: the "Fish-Flier"—a contraption capable of lifting one or two fish higher in the water. Alongside it, they developed a small telescope to peer into the unknown. Their mission had begun. The first launch reached 20 meters above their usual domain, a milestone that hinted at possibilities far greater than they had imagined. With each breakthrough, their ambition grew. They refined their telescopes, which soon allowed them to see the water’s surface. Their greatest revelation came when they saw that beyond a certain level, there was no water at all. The knowledge was electrifying. They had to reach that boundary.

With years of relentless innovation, they built a more advanced flying machine—a "Fish-Rocket," capable of carrying several explorers. Filled with water to sustain them, these rockets propelled the boldest of their kind to the surface. Some fish successfully reached the top, gazing upon a world they never knew existed. But reality struck hard. As they emerged into open air, they found they could not breathe. Some perished; others, realizing their peril, rushed back into the water.

This mission marked the greatest discovery of their time. They had proof: another world existed beyond their own. The realization filled them with awe and determination. They had stepped into a new age of exploration.

Determined not to be constrained by their limitations, the fish continued their advancements. They engineered more sophisticated vessels, sealed with water, allowing them to hover at the surface and study their newfound universe. Then, one fateful day, while peering through a telescope, a fish saw something unimaginable—birds soaring above the well. Though blurred by distance, their mere existence shattered everything the fish thought they knew.

Tears welled in his eyes as he cried out, "Eureka! Eureka!" He became an instant legend, the discoverer of life beyond their universe. The fish community was forever changed. No longer were they confined to their watery abyss. They had proof that existence extended far beyond their understanding. Their efforts intensified; they refined their technologies, their understanding, and their dreams.

After generations of perseverance, they built a device capable of soaring through both water and air. They found solid surfaces on the well’s walls where they could rest and launch expeditions. Then, finally, after years of effort, three fish ascended to the top of the well. What they saw defied comprehension: an immense, boundless land filled with creatures far larger than they had ever imagined. Their universe had expanded beyond measure.

At first, they had to live within their sealed water chambers, but with time, they discovered ways to replenish their water supply, allowing them to survive on the surface. The more they explored, the more they learned, until one day, they encountered the most perplexing beings of all—humans.

To their amazement, humans, too, were explorers, constantly striving to go beyond their known limits. The fish watched as these creatures reached for the stars, building spacecraft and telescopes to uncover the mysteries of the cosmos. It made them chuckle: perhaps, just as they had once thought their well was the entire universe, humans, too, were but a fraction of something far greater.

And so, a realization dawned upon them—what they had deemed infinite was merely a minuscule speck of an ever-expanding reality. Just as they had once believed the well to be the entire universe, perhaps humans, too, were only scratching the surface of a much larger existence. What humans considered infinite might be trivial to a greater intelligence, and even that intelligence might be insignificant in the grander scheme of things.

The fish took a deep breath, humbled by the infinite unknown. They understood that exploration is an eternal journey, a pursuit that defines existence itself. It does not matter if the discoveries they make seem trivial to others—what matters is that they keep searching, keep questioning, and never stop exploring. For it is through exploration that life finds its purpose, and it is through curiosity that the universe unfolds.
